Training:

  • Medical degree at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals
  • Basic surgical training at St. Thomas’ and St. George’s Hospital
  • Six months as a Senior House Officer at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Six months researching kuru in Papua New Guinea
  • Three year Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship at the Institute of Neurology – studying surgical instrument sterilisation from CJD
  • Six years of higher Neurosurgical training on the South Thames rotation
  • Six months as a registrar at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery – specialising in epilepsy and neuro-oncology surgery

Qualifications and awards:

  • BSc in Neuroscience
  • Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society (for kuru research)
  • Member of the Royal College of Surgeons
  • Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship
  • PhD (surgical instrument sterilisation)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (surgical neurology)
  • Norman Dott Medal
  • Marjorie Newsome Fellowship funded by the Barrow Foundation UK
